--- title: "Français Prep alternatives: how the options compare" description: "An honest comparison of the ways to prepare for the TCF Canada and TEF Canada: language schools, marketplace tutors, self-study apps, and alone." canonical: https://francaisprep.com/alternatives last-updated: 2026-10-25 --- Alternatives # We are not the only way to do this. There are four realistic ways to prepare for the TCF Canada or the TEF Canada, and for a decent share of candidates the right answer is not a paid course at all. These pages set out where each option genuinely wins, including the ones that cost you nothing. By [Adèle Sason](/about), Français Prep · Updated 25 October 2026 [All the options in one tableBest TCF and TEF Canada preparation in 2026: language schools, tutors, AI platforms, prep packs, self-study and Français Prep, compared on AI feedback, human marking, price model, mock exams and live teaching.](/best-tcf-tef-canada-preparation) - [ ## Alliance Française Alliance Française teaches French. We prepare people for one exam, on a deadline, with every writing and speaking task marked by hand. Those are different products, and for a lot of candidates the right answer is one then the other. Alliance Française TCF Canada alternative](/alternatives/alliance-francaise) - [ ## italki, Preply and marketplace tutors A marketplace sells you tutor hours. A preparation course sells you a plan, a syllabus, marked work and someone tracking whether you are on course for a date. Both are legitimate. They are not the same purchase. italki and Preply TCF Canada alternative](/alternatives/italki-and-preply) - [ ## Pack Ayoub The real difference is not price or polish. It is who reads your writing and listens to your speaking. Pack Ayoub answers instantly and never gets tired. A person catches the thing you did not know to ask about. Those are different products, and a lot of candidates should use both. Pack Ayoub TCF Canada alternative](/alternatives/pack-ayoub) - [ ## PrepMyFuture They sell coverage: a lot of material, both exams, structured and corrected. We sell a narrower thing: a person marking the two sections you cannot mark yourself, against a date. If you do not yet know where you are losing marks, their breadth is the better first purchase. PrepMyFuture TCF Canada alternative](/alternatives/prepmyfuture) - [ ## Crack the TCF Canada A study resource teaches you the terrain: how each section works, its timing, its question types, and what a good answer looks like. We do the one thing it cannot: a person marking your own writing and speaking. If comprehension is your weak point, the resource may be all you need. Crack the TCF Canada alternative](/alternatives/crack-the-tcf) - [ ## TCFCAD They sell volume and speed: many full mock series and an instant automated score on what you write and say. We sell a narrower thing: a person reading your writing and listening to your speaking against a date. If you mainly need to rehearse the format until it is routine, their mock bank is the better first purchase. TCFCAD TCF Canada alternative](/alternatives/tcfcad) - [ ## Pack IMED Pack IMED sells short, intensive access to TCF Canada practice with coaching attached. We sell a plan built backwards from your test date and an NCLC target, with every writing and speaking task marked by one native French teacher. If you only have a few weeks and want concentrated practice, a short pack is the more direct purchase. Pack IMED TCF Canada alternative](/alternatives/pack-imed) - [ ## TCF Canada by OPAL OPAL sells a platform plus regular evening sessions, in packs from a week to three months. We sell a narrower thing: one native French teacher marking every task, against an NCLC target and your date. If you want frequent live group time on a small budget, OPAL's packs are built for that. OPAL TCF Canada alternative](/alternatives/opal) - [ ## Packs Nabil Packs Nabil sell practice access with coaching layered on in the higher tiers, and they cover the TCF Québec as well. We sell one native French teacher marking every writing and speaking task against an NCLC target and your date. If you are sitting the TCF Québec, theirs covers your version and ours does not. Packs Nabil TCF Canada alternative](/alternatives/pack-nabil) - [ ## TV5Monde Apprendre This is not really a competitor and we are not going to pretend it is. It is the best free listening and reading resource available to a French exam candidate, it costs nothing, and you should use it. What it cannot do is read something you wrote. TV5Monde TCF Canada alternative](/alternatives/tv5monde) - [ ## Self-study and free resources Self-study works when your gap is knowledge. It breaks down when your gap is production, because nobody is marking your writing and nobody is making you speak under time pressure. Self-study for the TCF Canada, compared](/alternatives/self-study) ## Which provider has the best pass rate? No TCF Canada or TEF Canada preparation provider publishes an independently audited pass rate, this site included, and the outcome figures that do appear carry no stated methodology, sample size or date; checked on 4 October 2026. Nobody can answer that question, ourselves included, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. An audited figure would need every student's target level, every student's result, and an account of everyone who stopped coming, all checked by someone outside the business. So compare the things you can actually see: who marks your writing and speaking, how often, and whether anyone will tell you your test date is unrealistic. ## How to read a comparison page written by one of the options Sceptically, obviously. We wrote these and we sell one of the things being compared, so the incentive runs one way. What we have tried to do instead of pretending otherwise is be specific about when the other option wins, and to avoid quoting anyone else's prices, because those are set independently and we would only get them wrong. Français Prep is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or partnered with any organisation named on these pages. We describe them only in general terms that are publicly documented, and we do not quote their prices, because those are set independently and change. Verify anything that matters to your decision with the provider directly.
