How long is a TEF Canada result valid - and when does it expire?

A TEF Canada result is valid for two years from the date you sat it. That part is simple. What catches people out is that “valid for two years” is not the same as “usable until the day it turns two,” because an immigration application is not a single moment. It has at least two moments the result has to still be valid for, and the second one is the one that ends applications.

So the useful way to think about validity is not “when does my TEF Canada expire” but “which dates in my application does it need to survive.” Once you count those, the booking decision makes itself. How long is a TEF Canada result valid for?

Two years from the test date. The clock starts the day you sit the exam, not the day the attestation is issued, and not the day you upload it. A result marked and delivered weeks after the sitting is already weeks into its own life. This is the first reason to plan backwards: the wait for the result eats into the same window you are trying to use.

The same two-year rule applies to the TCF Canada, so nothing here is TEF-specific in principle. Both results are language evidence with a shelf life, and IRCC treats an expired result as no result at all, no matter how strong the score was.

Which two application moments must it cover?

For Express Entry, the result generally has to be valid at more than one point, and this is the crux of the whole question:

• When you submit your profile into the pool, so your score can generate points and rank you.
• When you are invited to apply and submit the full application, because IRCC checks the language result is still valid at that later stage.

Those two moments can be many months apart. When does a TEF Canada result expire in practice?

On paper, exactly two years after the sitting. In practice, the date that matters to you is earlier: the last day you could be invited and still submit before it lapses. If you are close to the edge, the safe reading is that a result within a month or two of expiry is a result you should be preparing to replace, not lean on. Build the margin in rather than betting an invitation lands in time.

What if my result expires before I get an invitation?

Then you re-sit, and you lose nothing except time and the fee, provided you plan for it. There is no penalty for holding an expired result; it simply stops counting. The mistake is discovering the expiry after an invitation, when the clock to submit is short and a fresh sitting plus marking may not fit. Re-sitting is a scheduling problem if you see it coming and a crisis if you do not.

How do you time a sitting to cover both moments?

Work backwards from the moment that ends applications, not forwards from today. The result has to be valid when you submit the full application after an invitation, so the safest plan places your sitting late enough that the result still has margin at that far end, and early enough that it exists before you enter the pool. When you cannot predict when an invitation will come, the practical rule is simple: do not let a result drift past roughly the eighteen-month mark without a plan to refresh it, so an invitation never catches you with an expiry you cannot beat.

If your French is likely to keep improving anyway, timing the sitting a little later has a second benefit: you sit closer to your best, and the two-year clock starts from a stronger result. The one thing to avoid is sitting early “to get it out of the way” and then watching the window close while you wait for the rest of the process to catch up.

Does an old score still count if my situation changed?

Validity is about the two-year window, not about you. A result inside its window counts even if you have improved since, and a result outside it does not count even if your French is now excellent.
