This post is about what the level is worth. NCLC 5 gets read as a kind of pass. It is a solid-sounding number in the middle of a scale, it appears in Canadian immigration documents, and a TCF Canada result that converts to it feels like it has cleared something. It is worth being clear early: NCLC 5 is below the level the French Express Entry routes are built around, and no amount of strength elsewhere changes that. That is not the same as saying a 5 is worthless. It is a real level that describes a real ability, and there are contexts in Canadian immigration where a level lower than 7 is what gets asked for. The useful thing is to know exactly which claim a 5 supports and which one it does not. ## What NCLC 5 describes NCLC and CLB are the same twelve-level Canadian scale under two names, Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens for French and Canadian Language Benchmarks for English. Level 5 sits at the bottom of the intermediate range. Broadly, it describes someone who can handle familiar, predictable situations in the language, follow the main thread of everyday speech and writing, and produce short connected text about routine matters, with noticeable gaps when the topic or the pace moves outside that. On a TCF Canada attestation you will not see the number 5 anywhere. The exam reports its own results by ability, and the Canadian level comes from an equivalency chart applied afterwards. The full conversions are on the [TCF Canada score chart](/tcf-canada/score-chart), and the [score converter](/tools/score-converter) will take your four results and show you where each one lands. ## Where 5 sits against the number Express Entry is built around [The number the French-language routes revolve around](/nclc-7) is NCLC 7, and it is asked for in all four abilities rather than on average. A candidate at NCLC 5 is two bands below that in whichever ability landed at 5, and because the weakest ability decides the level you can claim, one ability at 5 puts the whole file at 5. This is the part that catches people who have been preparing for months. Three abilities at NCLC 7 and one at NCLC 5 is a result at NCLC 5. It is frustrating, and it is also useful, because it tells you precisely where the remaining work is instead of leaving you to guess. ## The 5 in the points table is an English 5 There is a 5 in the Comprehensive Ranking System that a lot of people have half-remembered, and it is not a French one. The additional French points work like this: NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities is worth 25 points if your English is CLB 4 or lower or you did not take an English test, and 50 points if you also have CLB 5 or higher in all four English abilities. So the 5 in that rule is an English threshold that raises the value of an already-qualifying French result. It is not a French entry point. Federal and provincial routes set their own language requirements, some lower than the Express Entry French bonus asks for, some in only one or two abilities, and some on a different timetable. There are also contexts outside permanent residence, such as certain work and study routes, where a moderate level is the requirement. There is also a difference between a level that is below a threshold and a level that is below useful. NCLC 5 is enough French to live part of your life in it, and candidates at that level are usually much closer to functioning in French than they feel while looking at a result they did not want. That is worth saying because the most common reaction to a 5 is to conclude that the preparation failed, and the more accurate reading is that it worked and is not finished. Which route applies to you is not a question this site can answer, and you should not act on a general article for it. Take it to IRCC or to a licensed immigration consultant with your actual circumstances. What we can tell you is what your exam result converts to, and that is the piece most people are missing when they ask. ## How far two bands really is The honest answer is that it is further than it sounds, and less predictable than a linear scale suggests. The bands are not evenly sized, so the distance from 5 to 6 in one ability is not the distance from 6 to 7 in another, and it is entirely normal to spend longer on one step than on the two around it. The shape of the work also changes. Getting from a low level to a 5 is usually about coverage: more words, more structures, more listening hours. Getting from 5 to 7 is more often about control. Holding a tense system steady across a whole text, structuring an argument rather than listing points, and reading quickly enough that comprehension does not collapse under time pressure. Those are the things that show up in the marked sections, which is why [expression écrite](/tcf-canada/expression-ecrite) and [expression orale](/tcf-canada/expression-orale) are where the two-band gap tends to be widest. ## What to do with a result at 5 Convert all four abilities before you plan anything, because the instinct to work on your French in general is almost always the wrong allocation. One ability is furthest from the line, and that is the one that decides whether the next sitting is worth booking. Then be realistic about the calendar. A result is valid for less than two years at each point it is checked, so there is no advantage in re-sitting the [TCF Canada](/tcf-canada) before the weak ability has actually moved. NCLC 5 is below the level the French Express Entry routes are built around, which is NCLC 7 in all four abilities.
