One booking system, one calendar, a queue you join, and a date somewhere inside it. That picture is wrong in a way that costs real months, because there is no national booking system and there is no national calendar. The exam belongs to France Éducation International. The sittings belong to approved test centres. Each centre publishes its own sessions, sets its own fee, takes its own payment and decides how far ahead it opens its calendar. So you are not searching for a date. You are searching for a centre that has one. ## Availability is a local fact, not a national one Once you accept that, several confusing things stop being confusing. Two centres in the same city can have completely different availability, because they are separate organisations with separate rooms and separate staff. A friend in another country booking three weeks out tells you nothing about your own city. A forum post listing open dates was true on the day it was written and is usually stale within a week. It also changes the useful question. Not _quand est la prochaine session_, which has no single answer, but which centres you can reach and what each of them currently has open. Our [exam centre pages](/exam-centres) are organised that way round for exactly this reason. ## What actually limits the number of seats A room decides how many candidates can sit the two comprehension sections at once, and rooms are rarely the binding constraint. The constraint is usually the speaking test. The [expression orale](/tcf-canada/expression-orale) is conducted with an examiner, one candidate at a time, and a centre cannot interview forty people simultaneously however many desks it owns. That is why a session can look full while the building is half empty. The scarce resource is examiner hours, and examiner hours grow slowly. A centre cannot conjure a qualified examiner for a busy month the way it can add chairs. It is also why centres in smaller cities run sessions a few times a year rather than continuously, and why demand in the large cities arrives in lumps. ## Why the date you saw yesterday has gone Two mechanisms, pulling in opposite directions. The first is that at most centres a seat is only yours once the fee is paid. A form submitted on Tuesday and paid on Friday is not a booking, and in a busy month the seat can go in between. Check how your centre treats this before you assume you have time to think. The second is that centres release in batches rather than continuously. Some open a rolling window of the next few months and top it up. Some publish a whole term at once and then show nothing for weeks. Some open a session only when enough people have asked. If you checked a calendar once and saw nothing, you have learned about one moment, not about the year. Cancellations put seats back, often close to the date and at no predictable hour. This is the part that rewards patience: candidates who check a handful of centre pages twice a week for a month find something far more often than candidates who check once, conclude it is hopeless, and stop. ## Widen the search before you widen the wait When nothing is open, the instinct is to accept a later date. There are usually cheaper moves to make first. - Every approved centre you can physically reach, not only the nearest. A three hour train for a morning session is a smaller cost than four months of waiting. - Smaller cities near you, where demand is thinner even though sessions are less frequent. - A centre in a neighbouring country, if your travel documents allow it without an application of their own. - The other exam. IRCC accepts the [TEF Canada](/tef-canada) as well, it converts to the same NCLC levels, and its centres are a different set of organisations with a different calendar. A seat that requires a flight and a hotel is not a cheap seat, and sitting an exam after a night in an unfamiliar bed is not free either. Weigh that honestly against the cost of the wait rather than treating distance as a detail. ## Have all of this ready before you find a date The most ordinary way to lose a seat is to find one and then go away to look for something. Before you start checking calendars, put these in one place: - The identity document you will use, with the name exactly as it will appear on your immigration file. Not a different passport, not an older one. - A payment method the centre actually accepts. Some take cards, some only bank transfer, some only payment in person, and finding out at the wrong moment costs you the seat. - Your target window and your latest usable date, worked out in advance rather than in the moment. The document point is the one that turns a delay into a disaster. A result issued in a name that does not match the file it is going into is the one failure that cannot be fixed by trying harder, and it is entirely [avoidable at registration](/how-to-book-tcf-tef-canada). ## Book before you feel ready, but not before you know where you stand Preparation expands to fill whatever time it is given. Seats do not. If you wait until you feel ready before you start looking, the calendar will take the decision for you, and the date it offers will be months after the one you wanted. That is not an argument for booking blind. Book a date you can reach: find out roughly where you stand, work out how far that is from NCLC 7 or whatever level your plan needs, and let that set the window. Then leave room for a second sitting even if you never use it. The rules on retaking, and the minimum interval between two sessions, are set by the exam board and they change, so confirm the current ones with your centre rather than with a forum. No. France Éducation International approves the test centres, and each centre publishes its own sessions, sets its own fee and takes its own payment. There is no single list of every open seat, so the search is really a search across the centres you can reach. Français Prep never registers candidates or handles exam fees. ### How far ahead should I book a TCF Canada session? There is no national answer, because lead times are set by demand at your centre. Ask the centre two questions directly: how far ahead it publishes its calendar, and whether it keeps a list of candidates waiting for a date. In large cities plan on booking as soon as a workable date appears rather than when you feel ready. ### Why do TCF Canada dates disappear so quickly? Three reasons stack up. At most centres a seat is confirmed by payment rather than by the form, so an unpaid place can go while you gather documents. Centres release dates in batches instead of continuously, so an empty calendar can mean you missed a release. And speaking capacity is limited by examiner hours, since the expression orale is conducted one candidate at a time. ### What can I do if no dates are open in my city? Widen the search before you accept a later date. Check every approved centre you can physically reach, including smaller cities where demand is thinner, ask centres whether they hold a waiting list for cancellations, and look at the TEF Canada, which IRCC also accepts and whose centres run separate calendars.
