Searches for TCF Canada test dates usually assume there is a schedule to be found: a page, somewhere, listing the sittings for the year. There is no such page. The sites that appear to publish one are guessing, or copying a single centre and presenting it as the national picture. Dates exist at the level of the test centre. France Éducation International approves centres; the centres decide when to run sessions, how many to run and when to publish them. A year-ahead national calendar would require a coordination that does not exist and was never meant to. Checking weekly works. - **Batched.** The centre publishes a whole term at once, fills it, and shows nothing until the next release. An [empty calendar](/blog/tcf-tef-no-available-dates-what-to-do) here means you missed a release, not that there are no dates. - **On request.** Smaller centres open a session when enough candidates have asked for one. Nothing is visible because nothing has been scheduled, and an email genuinely changes the outcome. So the two questions worth putting to a centre in writing are how far ahead it publishes, and whether it keeps a list of candidates waiting for a date. It is worth writing the answers down, because the pattern determines how you spend your attention. A rolling centre rewards a weekly check and nothing more. A batched centre rewards knowing the release month and being ready on it, and punishes checking diligently for six weeks and then giving up a fortnight before the calendar opens. A centre that schedules on request rewards one email and ignores refreshing entirely. ## The session date is not the only date Planning against the session alone is how timelines quietly fail. At least five other dates sit around it. - The [registration deadline](/how-to-book-tcf-tef-canada), which closes before the session and sometimes well before it. - The days the sections actually run. Comprehension and writing are often grouped, while the [expression orale](/tcf-canada/expression-orale) can be scheduled separately, occasionally on another day. - The [interval before the result is available](/blog/how-long-tcf-tef-results-take), which the centre states and which is not the same everywhere. - The minimum interval before you could sit again, set by the exam board. - The two moments your result has to be valid for an Express Entry application: when you complete the profile, and when you submit the application for permanent residence. ## Plan backwards, not forwards Start at the end. Take the date you intend to submit, and walk back through that list. Subtract the result interval, so the attestation exists before you need it. Subtract a possible retake and the minimum gap in front of it, because you want that option to exist rather than to discover that it does not. Subtract the booking lead time in your city, which is the number that varies most and the one you have to ask about rather than assume. Whatever is left is your preparation time, and it is usually less than people expect. Doing it in this order has one uncomfortable benefit: it tells you early whether the plan is real. A candidate who needs two NCLC levels in seven weeks is far better off learning that now than three weeks before the session. The [study planner](/tools/study-planner) runs the same arithmetic against your weakest ability, which is the one your file is read on. Write the chain out as actual dates rather than as durations. Durations hide the problem, because six weeks and four weeks and three weeks all sound manageable one at a time and add up to a session you cannot reach. Dates on a page do not hide anything, and the first version of the chain almost always shows that one link needs to move. ## Build the retake into the calendar Most candidates who end up stuck did not fail. They cleared three abilities, missed one, and had no room left in the calendar to sit again. Plan the dates as though a [second sitting](/blog/can-you-retake-tcf-tef-canada) will happen, and treat not needing it as the good outcome rather than the assumption. That also changes which date you take when two are on offer. An earlier session with a retake window behind it is worth more than a later, more convenient session with nothing behind it. Know what you are aiming at before you choose: [NCLC 7 in all four abilities](/nclc-7) is the level the French routes are built around, and the [score chart](/tcf-canada/score-chart) shows how much room each band actually gives you. ## When to stop waiting for a better date Waiting has a price and it is rarely counted. Four months spent holding out for a nearer, cheaper session can cost more than the travel it saved, if it removes your retake window or pushes your result close to a validity boundary. There is also a second exam. IRCC accepts the [TEF Canada](/tef-canada), its centres are different organisations with different calendars, and it converts to the same NCLC scale. If TCF dates in your city are six months out, checking the other exam is a more productive hour than refreshing the same page. One caution about all of this. Everything above is about scheduling, not about eligibility. Each approved test centre schedules and [publishes its own sessions](/blog/tcf-canada-rendez-vous), so the dates that exist for you are the dates at the centres you can reach. A site presenting a year-wide schedule is either copying one centre or guessing. ### How far ahead do test centres publish their dates? It varies by centre and falls into three patterns: a rolling window of the next few months, a batch release covering a whole term, or sessions opened on request once enough candidates ask. An empty calendar therefore does not mean there are no dates, so ask the centre how it publishes and whether it holds a waiting list. ### How long after the test will I have my result?
