It is a reasonable thing to want and it is the least valuable thing a mock provides. If a score were all you needed, a dozen marked exercises would give you a better estimate than one full paper, and in less time. What a mock provides that nothing else does is the third hour. The way your attention behaves when it has already been working for two hours, what your handwriting does when you are hurrying, what you decide when a section is running long and you have to choose what to sacrifice. Those are the things that actually go wrong on exam day, and no amount of section practice ever surfaces them. ## What a mock is really testing Stamina, sequencing and judgement under pressure. Your French is whatever it is by then; the mock is testing your ability to deliver it in one continuous block without a reset in between. This is why sitting the sections of the [TEF Canada](/tef-canada) on four different evenings is a different exercise entirely. It is useful, and it is not a mock. Four fresh starts is the opposite of the thing being tested. ## Setting the conditions The conditions are the whole exercise, and they are not hard to reproduce. Before you start, get all of this in place. - Confirm the current section order and the current timings against the CCI Paris Île-de-France, and then follow them exactly. Do not use timings you half remember from a forum. - Phone in another room, not face down on the desk. - One glass of water and nothing else within reach. No dictionary, no notes, no browser tab open in the background. - A single sitting with only the breaks the real exam allows, taken at the points it allows them. - Start at the time of day your real sitting is booked for. Morning performance and evening performance are not the same, and you will find out which you are. The rule that people break most often is the pause. If you stop the clock to stretch, to reread a paragraph, or because you want to think about a phrase, you have converted the mock into an exercise set. It is still practice. It is no longer measurement. ## Timing, and what to do when a section runs long Decide your allocation before you start rather than during. For each section, write down the point at which you must have moved on, and put that piece of paper where you can see it. Then hold to it even when holding to it hurts, because the decision you are practising is exactly the one you will have to make on the day. On the receptive sections the failure to rehearse is abandoning a question. An item you cannot answer costs you the item. An item you refuse to abandon costs you that item plus every one you never reach after it. Practise leaving things behind, because it is uncomfortable and discomfort is what makes people freeze. On the writing, the failure to rehearse is overplanning. A candidate who spends a quarter of the section on a plan and then writes fast produces a worse text than one who plans briefly and writes at a steady pace. Use the [exam timer](/tools/exam-timer) with the section splits set in advance so that the clock, not your judgement, tells you when to start writing. A mock speaking section you did not record has given you no evidence at all, because your memory of how you sounded is not a reliable witness. ## Scoring it afterwards Mark the receptive sections cold, with no benefit of the doubt, then convert each ability separately on the [TEF Canada score chart](/tef-canada/score-chart) rather than working in percentages. Write down the level for each of the four abilities and circle the lowest. That circled number is the one your file is read from. For the productive sections, resist scoring yourself. Record instead what happened: whether you finished, where the time went, which task you found yourself avoiding, how many times you rewrote an opening sentence. Those observations are reliable. A self-assigned band is not. ## The debrief, which is where the value is Do this within twenty-four hours, while you still remember what you were thinking. Answer three questions in writing. - At what point did my attention actually drop, and what was I doing when it happened? - What did I decide under time pressure that I would not have decided with an extra ten minutes? - Which single change to how I spend the clock would have gained me the most marks? Then change exactly one thing before the next mock. One, not four. If you change four you will not know which one worked, and you will be back to guessing. ## How often to sit one Every three or four weeks is enough. More often than that and there is no time between mocks for anything to actually change, so you spend your preparation measuring rather than improving. Less often and you lose the thread. If your score sits flat across three mocks under the same conditions, that is a plateau, and it means the way you are preparing between mocks has stopped adding anything. The fix is not a fourth mock. The fix is to find out which ability is capping you and put someone qualified in front of it, which is what a [15-minute diagnostic call](/book) is for. A mock is all four sections in one continuous sitting, in the exam order, with no pauses. Exercises let you start fresh each time, which is exactly the thing a mock is designed to remove. The value of a mock is what it shows you about stamina and pacing in the third hour, not the score at the end. ### How often should I sit a full TEF Canada mock? Every three or four weeks. More frequently and there is no time between mocks for anything to change, so you spend your preparation measuring instead of improving. Change exactly one thing about your approach between mocks, so you can tell whether it worked. ### Should I score my own writing and speaking in a mock? No. Record what happened instead: whether you finished in time, where the time went, and which task you avoided. Those observations are reliable, while a self-assigned band is not, because candidates who are weak on range tend to judge themselves on accuracy. ### My mock scores are not moving. What should I change? A flat score across three mocks under the same conditions means the work you are doing between them has stopped adding anything, not that you have reached your limit. Identify which single ability is lowest after conversion, since that is the one deciding your level, and put your time and any feedback you can get entirely into it.
