CLB 5 on PTE Core takes 39 to 49 in listening, 42 to 50 in reading, 51 to 58 in speaking and 51 to 59 in writing. Each ability is converted on its own, so all four have to reach their figure before the result reads as CLB 5 overall. IRCC revises these pages, so confirm the current values there before you plan around a number. ## The PTE Core scores for CLB 5 IRCC's equivalency chart sets CLB 5 on PTE Core at 39 to 49 in listening, 42 to 50 in reading, 51 to 58 in speaking and 51 to 59 in writing. IRCC publishes PTE Core as a range per ability. The bottom of each range is the score that reaches CLB 5; anything inside the range stays CLB 5. The highest bar at CLB 5 is speaking, at 51; the lowest is listening, at 39. Candidates who average the four miss this, because IRCC reads every ability on its own. Only PTE Core counts for Express Entry. PTE Academic is not on the accepted list. ## CLB 4, CLB 5 and CLB 6 on PTE Core, side by side One level down, CLB 4 on PTE Core needs 28 in listening, 33 in reading, 42 in speaking and 41 in writing. One level up, CLB 6 needs 50 in listening, 51 in reading, 59 in speaking and 60 in writing. Moving from CLB 5 to CLB 6 takes 11 points in listening, 9 points in reading, 8 points in speaking and 9 points in writing. The biggest step is listening, so that is usually the section to train first. ## How many CRS points is CLB 5 worth? As your first official language, each PTE Core ability at CLB 5 earns 6 CRS points without a spouse or common-law partner and 6 with one: 24 or 24 across the four, in a block that tops out at 136 and 128. The next 3 points per ability are cheapest in speaking, which needs only 8 points more on PTE Core to reach CLB 6; listening needs 11 points. A speaking result just under 51 reads as CLB 4 and still earns 6 points, but it can fail a programme minimum that names CLB 5. ## Where IRCC names CLB 5 as a minimum Canadian Experience Class, NOC TEER 2 or 3 asks for CLB 5. On PTE Core that is 39 listening, 42 reading, 51 speaking and writing. Federal Skilled Trades Program asks for CLB 5 speaking and listening, CLB 4 reading and writing. On PTE Core that is 39 listening, 33 reading, 51 speaking, 41 writing. Each ability is checked against its own figure, so one result below the line fails the minimum however strong the other three are. ## What French adds to a CLB 5 PTE Core result With PTE Core at CLB 5 in all four abilities, NCLC 7 in all four French abilities would add 50 additional CRS points: the full French block, because your English already clears its CLB 5 condition. Compare that with PTE Core: lifting all four abilities from CLB 5 to CLB 6 takes 11 points in listening, 9 points in reading, 8 points in speaking and 9 points in writing, and is worth 12 first-language points without a spouse, less than the 50 the French block pays.
