# Être conjugation

Être (“to be”) in every tense you need, from the présent to the subjonctif, with example sentences and how it shows up in the TCF and TEF Canada.

## How être shows up in the TCF and TEF

Être is in almost every sentence you write or say in the exam, and it is also the auxiliary of the passé composé for verbs of movement. Markers notice quickly when « je suis allé » becomes « j'ai allé ».

-   Je suis infirmière depuis huit ans. _I have been a nurse for eight years._
-   Quand j'étais enfant, nous habitions à Dakar. _When I was a child, we lived in Dakar._
-   Il faut que vous soyez à l'heure le jour de l'examen. _You need to be on time on the day of the exam._

### How do you conjugate être in the present tense?

In the présent, être is: je suis, tu es, il/elle est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils/elles sont.

### What is the passé composé of être?

Être forms the passé composé with avoir and the past participle été: j'ai été, tu as été, il/elle a été, nous avons été, vous avez été, ils/elles ont été.
