# Taking the TEF or TCF Canada from India

Where the approved centres are listed, why the fee differs from branch to branch, how long the waiting lists really are, and how to prepare online while you wait for a seat.

In short

You can sit the TEF Canada or the TCF Canada in India at a centre approved by the exam operator, which usually means an Alliance Française branch. Each branch decides which exam it runs, sets its own fee in rupees and opens its own dates, and the wait for a seat can run from a session that sells out in minutes to a list many months long. Find the branch, get on its list, and only then plan your preparation around the date you actually hold. Confirm you are booking the Canada version: a general TEF or TCF sitting does not convert to the levels Express Entry reads.

Centres

## Where you can sit the exam in India

For the TCF Canada, the approved list is maintained by [France Éducation International](https://www.france-education-international.fr/). For the TEF Canada, the operator runs its own finder at [Le français des affaires](https://www.lefrancaisdesaffaires.fr/). You register with the centre and pay the centre. Français Prep never books, resells or guarantees a seat, and nobody legitimate can move you up a queue.

The thing that catches candidates out is that a branch does not necessarily run both exams. We read two branches through their own published exam pages and checked on 30 September 2026:

- [Delhi](/india/delhi): Alliance Française de Delhi states on its exam schedule page that it runs only the TCF Canada, and sends candidates for the TEF Canada, TEF Québec and TCF Québec to other Alliance Française centres in India.
- [Chandigarh](/india/chandigarh): Alliance Française de Chandigarh publishes a TEF Canada and TEF Québec page, and says demand is so high that the waiting period can reach 10 to 12 months.

We name these two branches only because each one publishes its own exam page, and we report what that page said when we read it. The exam operators hold the official lists of approved centres, those lists and the branches' own terms change, and a wrong date or address for a paid exam costs a candidate real money. Treat the operator's finder and the branch's own page as the authority, not this one.

Fees

## What the exam costs in India

The fee is set by each centre, charged in rupees, and revised from time to time, so we do not print a figure that would be out of date somewhere. The branch you register with shows the current amount, including any tax, on its own exam page.

Two things are worth knowing before you compare branches. The fee is for the exam only, so preparation, travel to the centre and a second attempt are separate costs. And a lower fee at a branch with a long waiting list can cost you more in the end than a higher one you can book next month, because a result that arrives too late for a draw is worth nothing to your profile. The [guide to exam fees by country](/blog/tcf-tef-exam-fees-by-country) explains what is behind the differences.

Dates

## Dates and waiting lists

Seats are released by each branch, not nationally, so availability in India is local and uneven. In Delhi the branch says seats often fill within minutes of registration opening. In Chandigarh the branch says the waiting period for a TEF Canada seat can reach 10 to 12 months. Both were checked on 30 September 2026, and both will move.

That changes the order you should do things in. Get on a list first. Count backwards from the date your application actually needs a result, remembering that results take time to arrive and must be less than two years old when you use them. If the nearest branch is full, look at another city or at the other exam, since both are accepted. The [registration guide](/how-to-book-tcf-tef-canada) walks through the process, and the [study planner](/tools/study-planner) works backwards from the day you sit.

Which exam

## TEF Canada or TCF Canada from India

In India the TEF Canada is searched for about 1,300 times a month and the TCF Canada about 480, so roughly 2.7 to one. That is habit, and a reflection of which exam local branches run, not a rule you have to follow. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada accepts both and converts both to the same NCLC levels.

So let availability decide first and your own strengths second. If the only seat you can get this year is for the TCF Canada, that is your exam. The [comparison page](/tef-vs-tcf) covers how the two differ in format, and the pages for the [TEF Canada](/tef-canada) and the [TCF Canada](/tcf-canada) cover each in full.

Points

## If you already have an English score

Most candidates in India arrive with an English test already done. A French result does not replace it. It adds to it, and it opens the French-language draws, which is why French is worth the effort even when your English is strong. The [French Express Entry points page](/french-express-entry-points) shows how the two languages combine, and [TEF Canada vs IELTS](/blog/tef-canada-vs-ielts) compares what each one earns.

Scheduling

## Preparing online from Indian time

India is nine and a half hours ahead of Eastern time in the Canadian summer and ten and a half in winter. An evening class in Montréal or Toronto lands in the early hours of the next morning in India, while a Canadian morning class falls in your evening.

That is the one practical thing to settle before you choose a live tier. A weekly class has to land at an hour you will attend every week for the length of a block. If no live hour works from India, the self-paced tier exists, and nobody will pretend otherwise on the call. Français Prep is online only. We have no classroom, office or partner centre in India, and we would rather say so plainly than let a country page imply otherwise.

Questions

## Sitting the exam in India

### Where can I take the TEF or TCF Canada in India?

At a centre approved by the exam operator, which in India usually means a branch of the Alliance Française. France Éducation International keeps the approved list for the TCF Canada and Le français des affaires keeps it for the TEF Canada. Not every branch runs both exams, so check which one your nearest branch offers before you plan around it.

### How much does the TEF or TCF Canada cost in India?

The fee is set by each centre, charged in rupees, and revised from time to time, so we do not print a figure that would be out of date somewhere. The branch you register with shows the current amount, including any tax, on its own exam page.

### How long is the wait for an exam seat in India?

It depends on the branch, and it can be long. When we checked on 30 September 2026, the Chandigarh branch said its waiting period for the TEF Canada could reach 10 to 12 months, and the Delhi branch said its TCF Canada seats often fill within minutes of registration opening. Get on a list before you build a study plan.

### Should I take the TEF Canada or the TCF Canada from India?

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada accepts both equally, so take the one you can actually book. People in India search for the TEF Canada about 2.7 times as often as the TCF Canada, but that reflects habit and what local branches run, not which exam is easier for you.

### I already have an IELTS score. Why add a French test?

Because French earns Express Entry points that an English score cannot. A French result at the right level adds points on top of your English ones, and it makes you eligible for the French-language draws. The points pages linked from this one show how the two languages combine.

### Can I prepare for the exam from India with Français Prep?

Yes, entirely online. India is nine and a half hours ahead of Eastern time in the Canadian summer and ten and a half in winter. An evening class in Montréal or Toronto lands in the early hours of the next morning in India, while a Canadian morning class falls in your evening. If a live class hour does not work from India, the self-paced tier does, and we will say so on the placement call.

### Do you have a centre or classes in India?

No. Français Prep is online only. We have no classroom, office or partner centre in India, and we would rather say so plainly than let a country page imply otherwise.

Prices are in Canadian dollars and include any tax that applies. Exam registration fees are paid directly to your test centre and are not included in any tier.

Rupee amounts are approximate, converted at the European Central Bank reference rate of 30 September 2026. You pay in Canadian dollars by card, your bank sets the final rupee amount, and some Indian cards need international online payments switched on in the banking app first.

WHY PREPARE HERE

## Preparation built around the exam you are actually sitting

Four things every tier includes, whether you study on your own or work with Adèle every week.

- ### Marked against the real criteria

Every writing and speaking task comes with a model answer and the marking grid, so you can see exactly what an examiner rewards. On the live tiers, Adèle marks your own work by hand and tells you which mistakes are costing you the most points.

- ### Timed practice in the real exam format

You practise each section under the clock, in the order and the length you will meet on test day, so the paper itself is never the surprise.

- ### The NCLC threshold always in view

Every section is worked against the NCLC thresholds IRCC publishes. A practice result is not an NCLC level; only your attestation gives one. Practice shows you where you lose marks.

- ### Study from anywhere, in your timezone

Everything is online, for candidates in Morocco, Algeria, Cameroon, India, France and Canada. Self-paced runs entirely on your own clock. On the live tiers, if you miss a class the recording and the correction still reach you.
