TEF Canada course

# TEF Canada preparation with a teacher who marks your French.

Preparation for the TEF Canada with Adèle, a native French teacher who reads every writing task and listens to every recording herself. Pick self-paced, small-group live or one-to-one, then work towards NCLC 7 in all four épreuves with your writing and speaking marked against the published criteria.

## What does TEF Canada preparation need to cover?

A TEF Canada preparation course must cover the four épreuves the exam scores separately: compréhension orale, compréhension écrite, expression orale and expression écrite. Express Entry reads each one as its own NCLC level, so NCLC 7 means clearing four thresholds on the Equivalence ancien score column: 249 out of 360 in listening, 207 out of 300 in reading, 310 out of 450 in speaking, 310 out of 450 in writing.

A good course finds the weakest of the four early, then spends most of the hours there, with a teacher marking the writing and speaking that software cannot.

- **Compréhension orale** (listening): NCLC 7 starts at 249 out of 360
- **Compréhension écrite** (reading): NCLC 7 starts at 207 out of 300
- **Expression orale** (speaking): NCLC 7 starts at 310 out of 450
- **Expression écrite** (writing): NCLC 7 starts at 310 out of 450

These are the lower bounds of the NCLC 7 band in the [IRCC conversion table](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/documents/language-test.html). Confirm them against the current IRCC table before you rely on them, and see the [TEF Canada score chart](/tef-canada/score-chart) for every band and for which column of your attestation to read.

Choosing a tier

## Which tier fits your TEF Canada date?

Start from two facts: how far each of your four scores sits from its NCLC 7 threshold, and how many weeks you have before the test date you are aiming for. The tier follows from those, not from how much you want to spend. If you do not know the first fact yet, the free call on the [booking page](/book) is where to find it out.

- ### Your date is months away and you are close to NCLC 7

Self-paced (CA$97 one-time) gives you the lesson library, timed practice tests for all four sections and a model answer for every writing and speaking task. It suits disciplined candidates whose gap is exam familiarity rather than French itself.

- ### Your date is two to three months away

Small-group live (CA$449 per 8-week block) adds a weekly live class with Adèle and marked writing and speaking every week. Choose it if speaking or writing is your weakest épreuve: a weekly class and weekly marking are the most reliable way to make yourself produce French.

- ### Your date is fixed and the gap is large

One-to-one (CA$800 per 10 sessions) schedules private sessions around your test date, builds the study plan from your diagnostic results and marks as much writing and speaking as you produce during the block.

Registration for the exam itself happens with an approved test centre, never through us. The [TEF Canada guide](/tef-canada) explains how registration, fees and results work.

The small-group block

## What do eight weeks of TEF preparation look like?

The small-group live tier runs in 8-week blocks: one live class with Adèle each week, plus a marked writing task and a marked speaking recording every week.

- ### Start with a placement call

Before you buy, a short call and a diagnostic task establish the level you are at and how far each épreuve is from NCLC 7.

- ### Every week has one live class and two marked submissions

The weekly live class is spoken French in a group small enough that everyone talks. Between classes you submit an expression écrite task and a speaking recording, both marked by Adèle and returned with the specific errors that cost the most.

- ### Practice happens under TEF Canada timing

The two comprehension papers are multiple choice against the clock, the expression orale is two role plays with an examiner, and the expression écrite is two written texts in an hour. Practice matches that: timed listening and reading sets, and speaking tasks where someone interrupts, pushes back and asks you to justify what you just said.

Marking

## Who marks your writing and speaking?

Adèle does, herself, on both live tiers. She is a native French teacher, and no software grades your texts or recordings. Self-paced includes a model answer for every task instead of individual marking. If writing or speaking is your weak épreuve, that difference is the reason to choose a live tier.

That matters more on the TEF Canada than candidates expect. Both production épreuves are marked by trained examiners against published criteria, and both are set in a realistic situation: the [expression orale](/tef-canada/expression-orale) has two sections in about fifteen minutes, and the [expression écrite](/tef-canada/expression-ecrite) asks for two texts in an hour, from 80 words in Section A and from 200 in Section B, according to [Le français des affaires](https://www.lefrancaisdesaffaires.fr/candidat/test-evaluation-francais/tef-canada/presentation/), which publishes the exam for CCI Paris Île-de-France. A model answer shows you what a good text looks like. A marked text shows you what yours is missing.

The comprehension épreuves are marked against an answer key, so the work there is timing and exposure. The [compréhension orale guide](/tef-canada/comprehension-orale) covers the listening paper in detail.

Honest comparison

## What a TEF Canada course changes, épreuve by épreuve

Self-study is a legitimate choice, so here is the comparison written the way we would want to read it, including the parts that argue against paying us.

| What changes | Preparing on your own | Preparing with Français Prep |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Expression écriteTwo sections, one hour | You write both texts, compare them with a model answer and guess what an examiner would have taken off. | Adèle marks every text against the published criteria and names the errors costing you the most points. |
| Expression oraleTwo sections, face to face | You record yourself with nobody to interrupt, disagree or steer you somewhere you did not prepare. | You speak live with a native teacher who plays the examiner's role, then get corrections tied to the moment they happened. |
| Compréhension orale and écrite | Untimed practice that feels productive and hides the time pressure you will meet on the day. | Timed sets in the format of each paper, so the clock on test day holds no surprises. |
| Knowing your level | An estimate, usually optimistic, until the attestation arrives. | A person's read of your writing and speaking against the published criteria each week. Only your attestation gives an NCLC level. |
| What it costs | Nothing beyond the exam fee and your own hours. | A tier fee, plus the same exam fee paid directly to your test centre. |
| Who it suits | Candidates already working in French every day whose only gap is the exam format. | Candidates whose writing or speaking is the bottleneck, or who have a fixed test date. |

If the left column already describes your situation, prepare on your own. We would rather lose the sale than sell a tier you do not need.

Two exams, one scale

## How is the TEF Canada different from the TCF Canada?

Both are accepted for Express Entry and both convert to NCLC levels, but they are different exams from different bodies: the TEF Canada comes from CCI Paris Île-de-France and the TCF Canada from France Éducation International. Preparation has to follow the exam you actually sit.

- **Scales.** On the TEF Canada, listening (out of 360) and reading (out of 300) each have their own scale; speaking and writing share one (out of 450). On the TCF Canada, listening and reading share one scale (out of 699) and speaking and writing are marked out of 20.
- **Production tasks.** The TEF Canada has two sections in each production épreuve, while the TCF Canada has three timed tasks in each.
- **Your attestation.** A TEF Canada result prints two columns per ability, and Express Entry reads the Equivalence ancien score column. Copying the wrong one is an easy mistake to make.

The [full TEF and TCF comparison](/tef-vs-tcf) goes through fees, availability and format side by side.

Timing

## How long does it take to reach NCLC 7?

It depends on your starting level, and any course that quotes a number of weeks before hearing your French is guessing. What decides it is the gap on your weakest épreuve, because NCLC 7 has to be reached in each of the four separately. A strong reader with weak speaking is not halfway there.

If you have already sat the TEF Canada, enter your official results into the [TEF and TCF score converter](/tools/score-converter), which shows each ability’s level and how far the weakest one is from NCLC 7. Then read [what NCLC 7 means for Express Entry](/nclc-7), and book a call so Adèle can hear one speaking task and read one text before you choose a test date.

OUR COMMITMENT

## What we promise, and what we will never claim

![](/lander/seal-badge.svg)

Your result is decided by official examiners we have no contact with, so no honest preparation service can promise you a score. What we can commit to is the work: the corrections, the practice papers and the teaching hours you paid for.

### What we do not claim

- We do not guarantee a TCF Canada or TEF Canada score, an NCLC level, or a number of CRS points.
- We do not register you for the exam, and we have no influence over marking, exam dates or seat availability.
- We are an independent preparation service, not an examiner and not an official test centre.

### Our commitment, in writing

- On the live tiers, every writing and speaking task you submit is marked by Adèle herself, never by software. Self-paced includes a model answer for every task instead.
- Prices are in Canadian dollars and include any tax that applies. Exam registration is never included: that fee goes to your test centre.
- We will never invent a testimonial, a statistic or a pass rate.

Before you buy

## TEF Canada course questions, answered plainly

### How much does a TEF Canada course cost?

Self-paced is CA$97 one-time. Small-group live is CA$449 per 8-week block, about CA$56 a class. One-to-one tutoring is CA$800 per 10 sessions. Prices are in Canadian dollars and include any tax that applies. The TEF Canada exam fee is separate and is paid to your test centre. The [pricing page](/pricing) lists what each tier includes.

### Can I get a refund, and do you guarantee a score?

You can have a full refund within 14 days of purchase if you have not opened the course content. On the live tiers, sessions you have not yet taken can be refunded on the same basis, and sessions already delivered cannot. We do not guarantee a TEF Canada score, an NCLC level or a number of CRS points, because official examiners we have no contact with decide your result. The full rule is in the [terms](/terms).

### How are sessions scheduled?

Everything starts on the [booking page](/book), where a Cal.com scheduler shows Adèle’s open slots and you pick a free 15-minute video call. That call sets your target level and tier. One-to-one sessions are then scheduled around your test date, and small-group classes run weekly across the 8-week block.

### Should I sit the TEF Canada or the TCF Canada?

Both are accepted for Express Entry and both convert to NCLC levels, so the choice usually comes down to which one a nearby centre offers on a date that suits your application, and which format suits you. If you have not decided, read the [TEF and TCF comparison](/tef-vs-tcf) first. The teaching overlaps heavily, and there is a [TCF Canada course](/tcf-canada-course) page as well.

### How long does it take to reach NCLC 7 on the TEF Canada?

It depends on where you start, and nobody honest can give you a number before hearing your French. A candidate one band short in a single épreuve is in a very different position from one who is two bands short in three. If you have already sat the TEF Canada, enter your official results into the [score converter](/tools/score-converter), read [what NCLC 7 requires](/nclc-7), or book the assessment for an estimate based on your own work.
