The points come from IRCC's [Comprehensive Ranking System criteria](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/check-score/crs-criteria.html). All of them were checked against canada.ca on 14 October 2026. IRCC revises these pages, so confirm the current values there before you plan around a number. ## How each test converts to CLB CELPIP-General needs no arithmetic: it reports on the same 1 to 12 scale as CLB, so a CELPIP 8 is a CLB 8. IELTS General Training and PTE Core do not line up with the scale, and IRCC publishes a separate minimum for every ability. That is why an IELTS 7.0 in all four is not one level: it is CLB 9 in reading, writing and speaking, and CLB 7 in listening, where IRCC asks for more. This is one block of the CRS, not your full score: age, education, work experience and the rest are counted separately. ## Why French matters Once your English is strong, each extra band buys very little: CLB 9 to CLB 10 is three points per ability. French is where the larger numbers sit. NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities adds 25 additional points on its own, and 50 if your English is also CLB 5 or higher in all four. French also counts as a second official language, and IRCC has run Express Entry draws for French-speaking candidates. Questions ## About the clb calculator for every canadian test ### What CLB is IELTS 7? An IELTS General Training 7.0 is CLB 9 in reading, writing and speaking and CLB 7 in listening. IELTS is not converted with one number: IRCC publishes a separate minimum for each ability, and listening asks for more than the other three. Listening needs 8.0 for CLB 9. ### What CLB is IELTS 6.5? An IELTS General Training 6.5 is CLB 8 in reading, writing and speaking and CLB 7 in listening. Reading, writing and speaking reach CLB 8 at 6.5, but listening needs 7.5. ### What IELTS score do I need for CLB 7? 6.0 in each of the four abilities. CLB 7 is the minimum the Federal Skilled Worker Program asks for in all four abilities. ### What IELTS score is CLB 9? 8.0 in listening, 7.0 in reading, 7.0 in speaking and 7.0 in writing. CLB 9 is worth 31 points per ability without a spouse and 29 with one, so 124 and 116 across all four. ### What CLB is CELPIP 9? CLB 9. CELPIP-General reports on the same 1 to 12 scale as CLB, so the CELPIP number is the CLB level in each ability, up to the top of the chart at 10 and above. ### What PTE Core score is CLB 7? 60 to 70 in listening, 60 to 68 in reading, 68 to 75 in speaking and 69 to 78 in writing. Only PTE Core counts for Express Entry; PTE Academic is not on the accepted list. ### How many CRS points is CLB 9? As your first official language, CLB 9 is worth 31 points per ability without a spouse and 29 with one, so 124 and 116 across all four. The first official language block tops out at CLB 10, worth 136 points without a spouse and 128 with one. ### Are NCLC and CLB the same thing? Yes. They are one twelve-level framework under two names: CLB for English and NCLC for French. A TCF Canada or TEF Canada result reported as NCLC 7 is the level an English speaker writes as CLB 7, and it earns the same first official language points. ### Why does the calculator show my lowest ability? Because program minimums are read ability by ability. The Federal Skilled Worker Program asks for CLB 7 in all four, so CLB 9 in three abilities and CLB 6 in one is below the line. The CRS points are added per ability, so the total still counts each one separately. ### What does French add to my CRS score? NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities adds 25 additional points, or 50 if your English is also CLB 5 or higher in all four. That is on top of the points for your first official language and the separate points for a second official language. ### Is IELTS Academic accepted for Express Entry? Only IELTS General Training counts for Express Entry. The Academic option and the One Skill Retake are not accepted. The same goes for PTE: Only PTE Core counts for Express Entry. PTE Academic is not on the accepted list. ### Is this an official CLB result? No. It reads IRCC's published equivalency charts and CRS grid and tells you which band your numbers fall into. Your official level comes from your test result, and IRCC reads that document, not this page.
