This block is one part of the Comprehensive Ranking System, not your whole score. It says nothing about age, education, work experience or a spouse's profile, and it is not immigration advice. NCLC 7 is the entry point for both halves of it.

These figures describe the additional points awarded for French-language ability only. They are not a full CRS score, and IRCC reviews the rules. Confirm the current values, the English condition attached to them, and the minimum level for French-language category draws on the official IRCC pages before planning around any number here.

Why this block is worth understanding on its own

Most of a CRS score is fixed by the time you start thinking about it. Your age will not improve. Your degree is already awarded. Your work history is what it is. The French block is one of the few places where a few months of deliberate effort can move a large number of points, which is why it attracts so much attention relative to its size.

It is also one of the few places where the marginal return is lumpy rather than smooth. There is no partial credit between NCLC 6 and NCLC 7. A candidate sitting one band below the threshold in a single ability is earning zero from this block, and the work needed to cross that line is often a matter of weeks rather than years.

The English half is the part people miss

Candidates who have spent a year on French sometimes discover late that a modest English result would have doubled the block. CLB 5 is not a demanding level. If you have never taken an approved English test and you are already at or near NCLC 7 in French, sitting one is worth costing out before you spend another month on French.

Is this my full CRS score?

No, and it is not close. This calculator covers one block only: the additional points awarded for French-language ability. Your full Comprehensive Ranking System score also counts age, education, work experience, arranged employment, provincial nomination and, if you have one, a spouse's profile. Use IRCC's own calculator for the total.

Why does my English result change the French points?

Because the block is built that way. Strong French on its own pays 25. Strong French plus English at CLB 5 or higher in all four abilities pays 50. The design rewards bilingualism rather than French alone, which surprises a lot of candidates who assumed an English test would not help them.

Why does it ask only for my weakest French ability?

Because the threshold applies to all four. NCLC 7 "in all four abilities" means exactly that: one ability at NCLC 6 keeps the whole block at zero even if the other three are at NCLC 9. This is the single most common misreading of the rule, and it is why our score converter shows you the weakest ability rather than an average.

Is NCLC 7 also the level for French-language category draws?

Those are a separate mechanism from this points block, and IRCC reviews the categories and their minimum levels periodically. Do not assume the number here carries over. Check the current category rules directly with IRCC, because a category that existed in a previous year may not exist now.

How current are these figures?

They reflect the rule as published at the time this page was written, and we have deliberately kept the tool to the one block that has been stable. Even so, IRCC can revise points, thresholds and conditions, and this site is not an authority on immigration rules. Treat any number here as something to verify, not something to rely on.

Is Français Prep giving me immigration advice?
