The bands come from the same published conversion tables as our [TCF Canada score chart](/tcf-canada/score-chart) and [TEF Canada score chart](/tef-canada/score-chart), and a test in this repository fails if the two ever disagree. Both follow [IRCC's language test equivalency tables](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/documents/language-test.html), last compared band by band on 30 September 2026. Band boundaries are reissued from time to time, so check yours against the official chart before making a decision that costs money. ## NCLC, CLB, and why you keep seeing both
NCLC and CLB are the same twelve-level framework under two names. NCLC is the French-language scale and CLB the English-language one, so a French result reported as NCLC 7 is the level English speakers write as CLB 7. IRCC reports French test results in NCLC.
In practice this trips up candidates who prepare in English. You read that Express Entry wants CLB 7, you sit a French exam, and the attestation comes back talking about NCLC. Nothing has gone wrong and no conversion is missing: the number you were told to hit is the number on your certificate.
## How to read the result
The conversion bands are wide, and that is the single most useful thing to understand about them. On the TCF Canada, moving from 452 to 458 in listening changes your NCLC level. Moving from 460 to 500 changes nothing at all. Two candidates with a forty-point gap between them can hold the same level, while six points can separate two different levels.
This is why a practice result is only useful once you know where it sits inside its band. Near the top of a band, more work on that ability buys you very little. Near the bottom, a few points move you up a whole level. The tool shows the target range under each field so you can see which situation you are in.

## What this tool will not tell you
It will not tell you whether you will pass, because neither exam has a pass mark. It will not tell you how many CRS points you will receive, because that depends on your English result and on rules IRCC sets and revises. And it cannot tell you whether the gap between your practice results and your target is closable before your test date. That last one is worth a conversation.

## About the tcf and tef score converter
### Is this a CLB calculator or an NCLC calculator?
Both, because they are the same thing. NCLC (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens) is the French-language scale and CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) is the English-language one, and they are two names for one twelve-level framework. A French result reported as NCLC 7 is the level English speakers write as CLB 7. IRCC reports French test results in NCLC, which is why the tool leads with that number and shows the CLB equivalent beside it.
### So is CLB 7 in French the same as NCLC 7?
Yes. The confusion is understandable, because most Express Entry material an English speaker reads talks about CLB, while every French attestation and every IRCC French equivalency chart talks about NCLC. The number does not change when you switch the acronym. If a forum post tells you the French requirement is CLB 7, it means NCLC 7.
### Does this converter give an official result?
No. It reads the published conversion bands and tells you which band your number falls into. Your official NCLC level comes from the attestation issued by the test operator, and Canadian immigration reads that document, not this page. Use this to plan, not to prove anything.
### Why does it ask for four scores instead of one?
Because Express Entry reads four. The TCF Canada and the TEF Canada both report listening, reading, speaking and writing separately, and each converts to its own NCLC level. There is no combined score and no average, which is why the tool shows you the weakest ability rather than a single headline number.
### Why is the weakest ability the one that matters?
Because that is how the French-language routes read your file. A candidate at NCLC 9 in three abilities and NCLC 6 in writing is treated as being below the NCLC 7 line, not somewhere in the middle. Practically, this means an hour spent on your weakest section is usually worth more than an hour spent on your strongest.
### My speaking result is out of 20, not out of 699. Which do I enter?
Enter what your attestation shows. On the TCF Canada the two comprehension sections are machine-scored on the 0 to 699 scale, while expression orale and expression écrite are marked by examiners and reported differently. The tool switches the expected range per ability, and shows the range it expects under each field.
### My TEF Canada attestation says 550 in listening, but this tool stops at 360. Why?
Because a TEF Canada attestation reports each skill twice and the two figures are on different scales. The large number is the Score / 699 column. The number this tool wants is the one under Equivalence ancien score, where listening runs to 360, reading to 300, and writing and speaking to 450 each. IRCC tells Express Entry candidates to take their language level from the ancien score column whatever date they sat the exam, and warns that entering the other figures can get an application refused. If your attestation only shows one column, ask your test centre for the equivalence before you enter anything.
### The tool says my score is outside the published range. What now?
The conversion chart this tool uses covers NCLC 4 through NCLC 10. A result below the bottom of that chart or above the top is real, it simply sits outside the band table, and the extra language points stop increasing above the top band anyway. Check your figure against the chart pages linked below.
### Do I need NCLC 7 specifically?
NCLC 7 is the level the French-language routes into Express Entry are commonly built around, which is why the tool measures against it. It is not a universal requirement, and the rules are reviewed regularly. Confirm the level your specific programme needs on the current IRCC pages before you plan a test date around it.
